The purpose of this project is to explore the relationship between food and the essential nutrients in them. The essential nutrients being researched are: iron, proteins, salt, carbohydrate (sugar), fats, and calcium. There are four labs in total. In the lab Nails for Breakfast, the nutrient being tested is iron. Our group tried to extract iron from a cup of cereal and calculated the amount of iron recovered and the amount of iron shown on the Nutrient Label of the product. In the Iodized Salt lab, the group tested for the presence of iodide in Kl, NaCl, iodized salt and non-iodized salt. The third lab is the Food Testing Lab. In the lab, our group tested for the presence of starch (Iodine Test), reduced sugar (Benedict’s Test), proteins (Biuret Test), fat and oil (Sudan III Test) in a variety of compounds and food products. In the last lab Measuring Calories, Celia and I tested for the amount of calories in six different kinds of snack foods (Regular Cheeto, Fat Cheeto, mini-marshmallow, popcorn, Cheese Doritos, Cool Ranch Doritos) and compared the calculated result with the number of calories represented on the Nutrition Label of each products.
The goal of this project explore the daily required intake of each nutrient, and find the kind of food people should ingest to maintain a healthy lifestyle and also to find the limits of the amount of each kinds of food that a person should eat each day by combining the researches on nutrients and the result of the four labs.
